For most of of my working life I have combined being a maths tutor with my work teaching in schools and colleges of further education.
Maths skills at some level are an essential requirement in today’s world, but so often a negative learning experience can leave people struggling to understand the concepts, feeling demoralised and convinced they are ‘no good at Maths’.
I have a particular passion for helping people at any level to overcome their fears and anxieties about Maths, which are so real for so many people, and to become confident and successful with ‘doing Maths’ at whatever level they wish.
Throughout my career I have taught people with a great range of previous Maths experience and of widely varying abilities, at levels from basic numeracy to Oxford and Cambridge University entrance preparation. I gain as much of a sense of achievement helping a student with limited ability overcome difficulties and make progress as in helping a student gain a place at Cambridge University to read Mathematics.
My tuition is always student centred. It is vitally important to understand how a student feels about Maths, where and why they have anxieties or difficulties, and to build their confidence, giving them a sense of progress and achievement. Of course, for students working towards an examination, the syllabus has to be covered, areas of confusion resolved, and exam questions practised. But at the same time enjoyment of our sessions and confidence building are a key part of the process.
I can honestly say I love tutoring sessions almost without exception, and most students seem to enjoy themselves too!
